Project Overview

Description

The ArchThinkCluster is the V0.1a prototype of a primarily solar-powered hyper-scalable modular open-source general-purpose supercomputer. The system is highly diverse in both use case and specification and can function in a wide variety of settings, such as a general-purpose home system or as a large but efficient data center. While being incredibly diverse in capability, the ArchThinkCluster particularly excels when filling a specialized role, such as when acting as a free general communications relay in a community where services like WiFi or emergency radio systems may not be available for one reason or another; or as the control node and infrastructure of a proactive safety system.

The ArchThinkCluster is what we are calling a self-organizing system. This means it was designed to be as “plug-and-play” and intuitive as possible. All the end-user’s would need to do is: install the Master node OS onto the master node, tell the master node when they are going to add a new machine to the cluster, and what its function will be. The new machine can then be connected to the master node via an Ethernet switch. The master node should then automatically organize the new slave node and direct it to perform its designated task when needed. When the user needs to use the cluster, for example, as a personal computer, the cluster serves them a nested virtual machine. The user’s personal VM can be any Linux-based operating system. This fundamental architecture is what gives the ArchThinkCluster high operational versatility and allows it to be both general and specialized in application. In essence, this system is a cheap, lightweight and efficient supercomputer that you can potentially place anywhere and use in most applications

Scope

  1. Develop a self-organizing Arch Linux-based cluster complete with self-hosted services such as local precise timekeeping, Storage Area Network and media server, PXEI boot system and active network monitoring system.
  2. Develop “home-keeping” services. These services include things such as local AI, a local web archive, a user distribution system, and secure IO/IoT device control and communication.
  3. Develop “Vanguard” services. These services include things such as. Active firewall, counter AI and data snooping, and data interrogation.
  4. Develop a self-organizing “mesh net” service. This is the system that allows the cluster to communicate with other nearby clusters and provide radio comms such as WiFi, WiFi-radio, LoRa, VLF, LF, MF, HF, VHF, UHF, and SHF. generating a redundant and adaptive comms network

Reason

The primary reason for this project is to bring advanced computing and employ .NET 3 architecture on a mass scale before close-source, big-name competitors. And most importantly, make it easy and fun to work with this system and future architecture and built on it.

We believe this is an important task because it limits the reach and power of the big-name closed-source competitors such as Microsoft, Nvidia, and Google. Through the method of educating, promoting capable action among participants, and protecting those who are ignorant or do not care.

By building a community that forces open-source values and principles, we can empower individuals to create and collaborate freely. This initiative not only exercises individual skills but also creates and safeguards a more optimized and inclusive internet, presenting more opportunities for more people to interact and collaborate.

By engineering an easy-to-work-with and fun web architecture, we can provide more chances for people to develop new innovations. This will in turn build towards creating the conditions for further technological progress and development, thus furthering what we believe to be one of the ideal goals of humanity.

A good secondary reason to undergo such a big project is if we, as a species, wish to persist for another 1000 years, we must start building the required architecture and infrastructure today. And it must be rock solid and it must remain so 1000 years from now. And when the time comes to update these systems, we must ensure that they are easy to update and retrofit.
